Frequently Asked Questions
Intense Pulse Light
-
Choosing the right skin rejuvenation treatment is an important decision. Below are answers to some of the most common questions we receive about Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Photofacial treatments at Thornbury Leg Vein Clinic.
If you don’t see your question here, we’d be happy to discuss your skin concerns during a personalized consultation.
-
IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is a non-surgical skin rejuvenation treatment that uses carefully controlled pulses of broad-spectrum light to improve common skin concerns such as sun damage, brown spots, facial redness, rosacea, broken capillaries, and uneven skin tone. IPL also stimulates collagen production, helping skin appear smoother, brighter, and more youthful over time.
-
A Photofacial is another name for an IPL treatment. The procedure uses light energy—not surgery or injections to improve skin tone, reduce pigmentation, and minimize redness while promoting healthier-looking skin.
-
Although both treatments use light energy, they work differently.
Traditional lasers use a single wavelength of light that targets one specific concern.
IPL uses multiple wavelengths, allowing it to treat several concerns at once, including pigmentation, redness, sun damage, and broken capillaries. During your consultation, your Registered Nurse will recommend the treatment best suited to your skin and goals.
-
IPL is commonly used to improve:
Sun damage
Brown spots
Age spots
Freckles
Hyperpigmentation
Rosacea
Facial redness
Broken capillaries
Spider veins on the face
Uneven skin tone
Fine lines
Dull skin
Enlarged pores
Early signs of skin aging
-
Yes. In addition to treating pigmentation and redness, IPL gently heats the deeper layers of the skin, encouraging natural collagen production. Increased collagen helps improve skin texture, firmness, and overall skin quality over time.
-
IPL is not a wrinkle treatment in the same way as Botox® or dermal fillers, but by stimulating collagen, it can soften the appearance of fine lines and improve overall skin texture.
-
IPL provides mild skin rejuvenation through collagen stimulation but is not considered a skin-tightening procedure. If skin tightening is your primary concern, treatments such as OPUS Plasma may be recommended. During your consultation, we’ll help determine which treatment is best suited to your goals.
-
IPL is one of the most effective treatments available for reducing brown spots caused by sun exposure. Treated spots typically darken temporarily before gradually fading as the skin naturally renews itself.
-
Yes. IPL effectively targets many age spots (solar lentigines) by breaking down excess pigment beneath the skin, allowing the body to naturally eliminate it over time.
-
Many freckles caused by sun exposure respond very well to IPL treatment. During your consultation, we’ll assess whether your pigmentation is suitable for IPL.
-
Yes. IPL is widely recognized as one of the most effective non-surgical treatments for reversing visible signs of sun damage, including uneven pigmentation, brown spots, freckles, and dull skin.
-
IPL can significantly reduce many visible symptoms associated with rosacea, including persistent redness and visible facial blood vessels. While IPL does not cure rosacea, many patients experience noticeable improvement with a series of treatments and occasional maintenance sessions.
-
Yes. IPL targets the tiny blood vessels responsible for persistent redness, helping restore a more even, balanced complexion.
-
Yes. IPL is commonly used to reduce broken capillaries on the face, particularly around the nose, cheeks, and chin.
-
Small facial spider veins often respond very well to IPL treatment. During your consultation, we’ll determine whether IPL is the most appropriate treatment for your individual concerns.
-
Most patients describe IPL as feeling like a quick snap of a small elastic band against the skin. Treatments are generally very well tolerated and do not require anesthesia.
-
Treatment time depends on the area being treated but most appointments take between 20 and 45 minutes.
-
Most patients achieve their best results with a series of three to five treatments spaced approximately four weeks apart. Your treatment plan will be customized to your skin concerns and goals.
-
Some patients notice improvements after their first treatment, but optimal results typically develop gradually throughout your treatment series as pigmentation fades and collagen production increases.
-
Results can last for many months with proper skincare and diligent sun protection. Many patients choose maintenance treatments once or twice each year to help preserve their results.
-
IPL requires very little downtime. Mild redness and warmth are common immediately after treatment and usually resolve within several hours.
-
Darkening of pigmented spots is a normal part of the healing process. The treated pigment gradually rises to the surface before naturally flaking away over the following one to three weeks.
-
Some patients experience mild flaking as pigmented areas naturally shed. Significant peeling is uncommon.
-
Most patients can return to wearing makeup once any initial redness has settled, often within 24 hours. Your Registered Nurse will provide personalized aftercare instructions based on your treatment.
-
Yes. Most patients return to normal daily activities immediately following treatment.
-
It is generally recommended to avoid strenuous exercise, hot yoga, saunas, and excessive heat for the first 24 hours after treatment to reduce skin irritation.
-
Yes. Protecting your skin from ultraviolet exposure is essential before and after treatment. Daily use of broad-spectrum sunscreen helps protect your skin and maintain your results.
-
IPL may still be appropriate during the summer for some patients, provided you avoid tanning and follow strict sun protection. We’ll discuss timing during your consultation.
-
Fresh tanning increases the risk of pigmentation changes and may make IPL unsuitable until your tan has faded
-
IPL is often an excellent option for individuals who wish to improve sun damage, pigmentation, facial redness, rosacea, or early signs of skin aging. During your consultation, we’ll determine whether IPL is the right treatment for your skin type and concerns.
-
IPL may not be appropriate for everyone. Certain skin tones, recent tanning, some medications, pregnancy, or specific medical conditions may affect treatment suitability. A personalized consultation helps ensure your treatment is both safe and effective.
-
When performed by experienced medical professionals using appropriate technology and patient selection, IPL is considered a safe and well-established treatment for many common skin concerns.
-
Yes. IPL is frequently combined with treatments such as medical-grade skincare, Botox®, dermal fillers, or OPUS Plasma as part of a personalized skin rejuvenation plan. We do offer special pricing on OPUS add on, when receiving IPL.
-
Most patients choose maintenance treatments every 6 to 12 months to help preserve their results and maintain healthy, radiant skin.
